Preparation for the session on Monday 2 November (6pm)

Hi Everybody,

The ICT Seminar is now underway and there will be further sessions on Monday 2 November, Monday 16 November and Monday 30 November - all these will start at 6pm. I look forward to seeing you there.

For those coming to the next session I would like you to look at the "Ten tried and tested internet tools for teachers" which you can find at the following link:

Box of tricks

"Box of tricks" is a very interesting blog dealing with technology and education and has lots of practical advice and tips for teachers. The "Ten tried and tested internet tools for teachers" is intended to give you some ideas about what web applications might be useful for creating classroom activities.

I would like each participant to choose one or two of the recommended tools in order to investigate their potential for application in the classroom. Please come prepared to explain to other participants in the seminar what you think about one or two of these tools in terms of:
  • what they allow you to do
  • how motivating they are
  • their educational value
  • their ease of use

I would also like you to all read a fascinating article called "Like boiling a frog" which is about Wikipedia and which will form the basis for a discussion during the course of the 2 November session. Regina has kindly offered to scan it and post it on this blog in pdf format so if all goes well we will have easy access to it right here very soon.

Anyway, I am sure that this is more than enough to keep you all busy. Enjoy the research and good reading!

Greetings from Cairo

Hi, this is Chapela from Cairo. I have accepted your kind invitation to participate in your blog. I think your Seminar is going to be very exciting, being as I am so far away from you. It is amazing to think that I can take part in it. I'll try to read the materials you upload and contribute as much as I can. We could contact through the Messenger, too. If you connected a microphone, we could even talk to each other in real time. Don't you think it is unbelievable? The world of ITCs is as useful as we want it to be. If you need ideas as to what to use blogs for, here you have some.

Hi,

I am a little bit lost but I am learning a lot today

Orientation session

Good afternoon from the seminar. I'm Anna. This is the first day and we are just trying to set this new blog. The objectives and the contents are clear. Don't worry, it isn't difficult. Let's start!

Saturday 17 October 2009

Orientation session (1)

For the Wednesday session (21 October) everybody should:

  1. Take half an hour to carefully reflect on what information and communication technologies we already use at home and/or in the classroom, noting down ideas/comments/personal experiences (both positive and negative) so that every member of the seminar will be ready to contribute to the seminars.
  2. Use the internet to access the Wikipedia entry for 'blog', noting down the main points along with any other aspects of particular interest to them so that they are ready to participate in a discussion about blogs. Participants should print out the entry to bring it with them to the seminar for reference purposes.

Welcome to the seminar

Hello everybody.

Ready to begin participating? This year we are going to count on a new member who has accepted to coordinate the practical part of the seminar: Oliver Woolley

He should provide material for and facilitate the four seminars he's running while leaving the applied technical side for the practical sessions when we will be working on our own.

Additional to the info you have already read on then CRP webpage, he has stated the following:

1. The official title: "Information and Communication Technologies in the Classroom"

2. The objectives are:

  • explore the above at the practical, theoretical and personal level
  • generate a participative blog covering the seminar
  • create blogs for use in the classroom (one per participant)
  • exchange experiences of applying ICT in the classroom
  • develop ICT resources for educational use (minimum one resource/lesson plan per participant)
  • work on English language and communication skills

3. The Sessions will be organised as shown below:

  • Session 1 - Orientation (run by coordinator)
  • Session 2 - Introduction to ICT + Blogs and their applications
  • Session 3 - Practical (run by coordinator)
  • Session 4 - ICT resources in the classroom: sharing ideas and developing educational application
  • Session 5 - Practical (run by coordinator)
  • Session 6 - Practical (run by coordinator)
  • Session 7 - Putting ICT in its global context: a general discussion of important phenomena such as Wikipedia, Google and Microsoft
  • Session 8 - Practical (run by coordinator)
  • Session 9 - Presentation of participants' classroom blogs and applied ICT teaching tools combined with feedback, constructive comments and debate

During Session 1 I hope we will be able to begin to make contributions to it.
